Art & Design

Intent
Art is an essential part of a child’s curriculum and is essential to the overall development of the child. At Sherwood Junior School we aim:
- To encourage creativity in all subject areas, to allow students to develop their creative style.
- To ensure a wide range of artists and craftspeople are taught to ensure a diverse curriculum is delivered.
- To develop student’s observation skills to allow them to critically evaluate existing artworks as well as their own pieces.
- To explore different mediums, to allow students to experience different art forms.
- To nurture students’ creative abilities and provide opportunities for them to observe, practice and create in the subject.
The aims of art are to teach children to:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage and printing.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand their art forms' historical and cultural development.
- Create a sketchbook which includes ideas for creative pieces and outlines the creative process.
